Dr. Shah Faesal comes from a remote village in Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. He studied in a village government school.  Faesal had done his class X from Sogam high school in Kashmir valley and done his MBBS from Srinagar's Sher-i-Kashmir Medical College. Faesal had choosen Public Administration for in prelim and Public Administration and Urdu Literature for Mains. He took coaching for the Civil Services examination at Hamdard Study Circle, New Delhi. Eight years ago, his father Ghulam Rasool Shah , a school teacher was gunned down by militants. But that incident did not deter Faesal to become the first Kashmiri ever to top the civil services exam. He is also the second Muslim in the history to achieve the feet. After his father’s death his mother Mubeena Begum who is also a school teacher, took the responsibility and motivated him throughout his preparation. Faisal's younger brother Shah Nawaz is also a doctor while his younger sister Talat Shah is a library assistant. As he has achieved a great feat inspite of all odds many young aspirants look upto him as a role model.
